Shea language house
University of virginia
charlottesville, VA

  • Completed 2003

This residence hall replaced the 50-year-old Gildersleeve Apartments that formerly occupied the site.  The Shea House is a four-story, 30,000sf building providing housing accommodations for 80 students, while also offering three fully-equipped guest apartments, lounges, a library/study, commercial kitchen, resident kitchen and a 70-seat dining room.  The building is designed to respond to the architectural character of the adjacent residence halls through appropriate massing, scale and proportion.  The design incorporates regional building materials consistent with both the University of Virginia's historic Central Grounds and the surrounding late-19th-century neighborhood.
