Crockett Hall : Wise, VA

The University of Virginia's College at Wise has been working with Mitchell Matthews for over ten years on the feasibility and development of residence halls on campus.  Crockett Hall, completed in 2007, was the result of several conceptual design studies and steady collaboration between the university and our firm.  The 14,000 square foot academic building is located at the main entrance to the campus and serves as a primary nexus of student and visitor pedestrian traffic.

Crockett Hall is the new focal point of The University of Virginia's College at Wise.  By successfully incorporating the original historic structural stone exterior into the comprehensive renovation, Mitchell/Matthews has preserved a crucial link by interconnecting the architectural heritage of the college and the surrounding region.  The site includes extensive landscaping, including a sunken garden and adjacent plaza surrounded by walks on all sides.  The renovation included new mechanical, telecommunications, life/safety, structural and access control systems servicing offices, conference rooms, customer service counters, corridors and public spaces.
