Mitchell/Matthews is a studio for urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture and interior design led by John Matthews and a group of dedicated senior partners. Located in a renovated 80-year old stone farmhouse in Charlottesville, Virginia, we work on a variety of master planning, residential, commercial and academic projects throughout Virginia and neighboring states.

History/Philosophy

Mitchell/Matthews began as a two-person firm in 1989. Our desire then-- as it is now-- was to pursue our passion for architecture and design with the guiding principle to do absolutely the best job we can for each client. We knew that if we provided thoughtful, intelligent solutions, consistently reliable service and exceptional design, we would attract a base of discerning clients and, in turn, a sustainable architectural practice. The success of this philosophy can be measured by our awards for design excellence. We have received recognition for production of consistently distinguished architecture from both clients and peers for a wide variety of work-- from individual small projects to the master plans of entire communities.

Mitchell/Matthews has no fixed style of architecture, nor do we believe that any one style is suitable for every project. We do believe in the importance of context, attention to detail, and the creation of individual designs that blend seamlessly and appropriately with their neighbors. Our preference is for simple design with a traditional sensibility. We work hard to include the owner as a coauthor of the design-- this way the final product is a signature of the owner, the location and the project specifics rather than the architect.

Our pledge is to strive to create interesting, human-scaled and beautifully crafted spaces, and places, while maximizing the value the owner receives for what he or she spends.
